Share a Document with Claude

After this, you'll be able to drop any document into Claude and ask focused questions that get you the specific answer you need, not a summary of everything.

Before you start

You'll want a working sense of Graduate to Chat before this lesson, since document sharing is a chat workflow and knowing when to use chat over tab-complete is the prerequisite skill.

The idea

You have a 14-page contract sitting on your desk and you need to find the renewal clause before your 2pm call. You could read the whole thing, or you could drop it into Claude and ask the exact question you need answered. Claude can read a 60-page PDF in seconds. What saves you time is asking the right question, not the upload itself.

Here is the before and after: Uploading a file and asking 'summarize this' gets you a summary. That is fine if you need an overview. But if you need a specific answer, ask a specific question: 'What are the renewal terms and the notice period in this contract?' or 'Does this document mention any penalty clauses?' The more specific the question, the more useful the answer.

You can share files in three ways depending on which tool you use. In Claude.ai on desktop, there is a paperclip icon in the chat input. Click it to attach a PDF, Word doc, or text file. In Claude Desktop (the Mac or Windows app), you can drag and drop files directly into the chat window. Google Docs and other web documents work best when you copy the text and paste it directly into the chat, since Claude cannot access links that require you to log in.

One file, one focused question. That is the pattern that gets useful answers on the first try.

Watch out for

  • Uploading an image-only PDF and expecting Claude to read it. If someone scanned a paper document and saved it as a PDF without running text recognition, Claude sees an image, not text. The fix: use your scanner's OCR feature, or try Google Drive's 'Open with Docs' which runs text recognition automatically.
  • Pasting a Google Docs link instead of the text. Claude cannot open links that require you to log in. Copy the text from the doc and paste it directly into the chat.
  • Asking 'summarize this' when you have a specific question. Summaries are general. Specific questions get specific answers.
  • Expecting Claude to remember the document in a new conversation. Each chat starts fresh. Re-upload or re-paste the document each session.
  • Uploading very large files over 10MB. Claude handles most documents easily, but extremely large files may time out. If a PDF is large, try splitting it or copying the relevant section.

What good looks like:

  • You attached or pasted a real document you actually need to work with
  • You asked one specific question rather than just 'summarize this'
  • Claude's answer addressed your actual question with specific details from the document
  • You got a usable answer without reading the whole document yourself
  • You followed up with at least one more specific question based on the first answer

The contract auto-renews for successive 12-month periods unless either party gives written notice at least 60 days before the end of the current term. The current term ends on December 31, 2025, which means you would need to send a cancellation notice by November 1, 2025 to avoid being locked into another year.

One thing worth flagging: Section 8.3 includes a price adjustment clause that allows the vendor to increase fees by up to 8% at each renewal without renegotiation. If you are planning to renew, you may want to address that cap before the November deadline.

What good looks like:

  • You used Claude's flag as a starting point for a follow-up question

What a good response looks like:

Your specific question answered: The indemnification clause in Section 11 puts the liability on your company, not the vendor, for any third-party claims arising from your use of their service. That is the opposite of what a standard indemnification clause looks like.

Questions you have not asked yet that are worth answering: What happens to your data if the vendor goes out of business or you cancel? Section 14 (Data Retention) says they delete everything within 30 days. If your team has been using this service to store client documents, you need a data export before you cancel, not after.

Section flagged for a second look: Section 6.2 (Acceptable Use) prohibits using the service 'for competitive analysis.' That language is broad and could technically cover benchmarking you do routinely. I would confirm with your legal team whether your current use falls inside that boundary.

When this breaks

  • Breaks when the file is an image-only scan, because Claude reads pixels instead of words and produces confident answers from nothing it can actually parse.
  • Breaks when your question is generic (a 'summarize this' style ask), because there is no target for the model to aim at and the answer regresses to a top-line overview that misses the clause you actually needed.

Claude can do it for you

After uploading any document, ask Claude: 'What should I be asking about this document that I have not asked yet? What stands out to you?' You do not need to know the right questions in advance. Claude will surface what matters.
