The idea
You have a 14-page contract sitting on your desk and you need to find the renewal clause before your 2pm call. You could read the whole thing, or you could drop it into Claude and ask the exact question you need answered. Claude can read a 60-page PDF in seconds. What saves you time is asking the right question, not the upload itself.
Here is the before and after: Uploading a file and asking 'summarize this' gets you a summary. That is fine if you need an overview. But if you need a specific answer, ask a specific question: 'What are the renewal terms and the notice period in this contract?' or 'Does this document mention any penalty clauses?' The more specific the question, the more useful the answer.
You can share files in three ways depending on which tool you use. In Claude.ai on desktop, there is a paperclip icon in the chat input. Click it to attach a PDF, Word doc, or text file. In Claude Desktop (the Mac or Windows app), you can drag and drop files directly into the chat window. Google Docs and other web documents work best when you copy the text and paste it directly into the chat, since Claude cannot access links that require you to log in.

Questions you have not asked yet that are worth answering: What happens to your data if the vendor goes out of business or you cancel?
